Methodology
Follow-up of a prospective double-blind randomised trial in mothers of infants born at 27-32 weeks gestation who received a silymarin-phosphatidylserine plus galega galactagogue or placebo in the first month after delivery; milk production assessed at 3 and 6 months.
Key Findings
At 3 months, exclusive human milk feeding was reported by more mothers in the galactagogue group than in the placebo group, suggesting silymarin-based supplementation helps sustain milk production in mothers of very preterm infants.
Conclusions
A silymarin-phosphatidylserine and galega galactagogue taken in the first month after delivery was associated with better maintenance of milk production over 3-6 months.
Limitations
Small sample, retrospective self-reported follow-up of the original trial, single centre, combination product prevents attribution to silymarin alone.
