    Comprehensive review of probiotic health benefits including effects on gut microbiome, immune function, and metabolic health.

    Methodology

    Narrative review of probiotic mechanisms and clinical applications across gastrointestinal, immune and metabolic outcomes.

    Key Findings

    Reviewed evidence supports probiotics for antibiotic-associated and infectious diarrhoea, some benefit in irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, and modulation of mucosal immunity through competitive exclusion of pathogens, barrier reinforcement and cytokine modulation. Effects are strain-specific and dose-dependent; benefits shown for one strain cannot be assumed for others.

    Conclusions

    Probiotics are generally safe in healthy people and have credible benefit for specific diarrhoeal and gut conditions, but claims must be made at the strain level rather than for probiotics as a category.
