    Chaga mushroom-induced oxalate nephropathy

    Kikuchi Y, Seta K, Ogawa Y, Takayama T, Nagata M

    Published in Clinical Nephrology

    Methodology

Single-patient case report with renal biopsy in a 72-year-old woman who ingested 4-5 teaspoons/day of chaga powder for 6 months

    Key Findings

Renal biopsy showed diffuse tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis with oxalate crystals in tubular lumina and urinary sediment; hemodialysis was required.

    Conclusions

Chaga mushrooms contain extremely high oxalate concentrations and prolonged high-dose intake can cause oxalate nephropathy.

    Limitations

Single case; no dose-response data; concurrent malignancy and hepatectomy may have contributed to renal vulnerability.

    Supplements Studied

    Chaga
    Herb
