Published in Phytomedicine
Methodology
Randomized pilot trial of 52 H. pylori-positive patients allocated to mastic gum 350 mg tid, mastic gum 1.05 g tid, mastic gum plus pantoprazole, or standard triple therapy, with urea breath test confirmation.
Key Findings
Eradication occurred in 4/13 and 5/13 mastic gum patients and 0/13 with mastic plus pantoprazole, versus 10/13 with standard triple therapy; differences in breath test values were significant only for triple therapy.
Conclusions
Mastic gum has modest bactericidal activity but is far inferior to standard antibiotic eradication therapy.
Limitations
Pilot size, four small arms, no placebo group, and short treatment duration.
