Methodology
Randomized clinical trial in patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis comparing arthrocentesis plus hyaluronic acid with or without 3 months of oral glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM, with pain VAS and mandibular function measured to 12 months.
Key Findings
Three months of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM after arthrocentesis plus intra-articular hyaluronic acid gave no additional improvement in pain, maximum mouth opening or joint sounds at 12 months compared with the procedure alone.
Conclusions
Adding 3 months of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM after arthrocentesis plus hyaluronic acid injection produced no additional clinical benefit over the procedure alone at 12 months.
Limitations
Very small sample (n=26) prone to type II error, single-centre, and the strong effect of the procedure itself may mask a modest supplement effect.
Supplements Studied
These findings suggested that the use of GCM supplementation after arthrocentesis plus intraarticular HA injection produced no additional clinical benefits or improvements for patients with TMJ-OA compared with arthrocentesis plus intraarticular HA injection alone.
