Methodology
Twelve-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of an aqueous ashwagandha extract (500 mg/day) in recreationally active men following a supervised resistance training programme.
Key Findings
The ashwagandha group improved squat and bench press one-rep max significantly more than placebo and showed a greater increase in average bench press power, with a trend toward improved recovery. No adverse changes in blood chemistry were observed.
Conclusions
A low-dose aqueous ashwagandha extract improved upper and lower body strength and favourably altered body composition in resistance-trained men.
Limitations
Small sample, industry-funded, and effects on power and recovery markers were modest or non-significant.
Supplements Studied
The ashwagandha group improved squat and bench press one-rep max significantly more than placebo over twelve weeks of supervised training.
Outcomes Measured
Squat and bench press one-rep max improved significantly more than placebo over twelve weeks.
