    High-load strength training improves outcome in patients with plantar fasciitis: A randomized controlled trial with 12-month follow-up

    Abstract

    Investigated the effectiveness of shoe inserts and plantar fascia-specific stretching versus shoe inserts and high-load progressive strength training in patients with ultrasonography-verified plantar fasciitis.

    Methodology

    48 patients with ultrasound-confirmed plantar fasciitis randomized to shoe inserts + plantar-fascia-specific stretching vs shoe inserts + progressive high-load strength training for 3 months, followed to 12 months.

    Key Findings

    Both groups improved significantly in pain and function. High-load strength training group showed comparable or superior long-term outcomes and greater satisfaction at 3 months.

    Conclusions

    High-load progressive strength training is a viable, effective alternative to plantar-fascia stretching for plantar fasciitis and may offer faster short-term improvement.

    Limitations

    Small sample size (n=48); single-center; not blinded to intervention type; longer-term adherence not tracked in detail.
