Comprehensive review of vitamin E role in cardiovascular disease prevention
Methodology
Review of observational cohort data and randomised trials of vitamin E intake and supplementation in relation to coronary heart disease risk.
Key Findings
Large observational cohorts reported lower coronary heart disease rates among people with high vitamin E intake, but randomised trials of alpha-tocopherol supplementation, including HOPE and GISSI, found no reduction in cardiovascular events. High-dose supplementation showed signals of harm, including increased heart failure and haemorrhagic stroke risk in some trials.
Conclusions
The apparent cardiovascular benefit of vitamin E in observational studies was not confirmed in randomised trials; supplementation is not recommended for cardiovascular prevention.
