Abstract
Randomized comparison of SDA-enriched soybean oil versus EPA on the omega-3 index.
Methodology
Randomized trial in 45 overweight healthy volunteers given SDA-enriched soybean oil (24 mL/d, ~3.7 g SDA), regular soybean oil, or ~1 g/d EPA ethyl esters for 16 weeks; per-protocol analysis of 33 subjects
Key Findings
Omega-3 index rose 19.5% with SDA and 25.4% with EPA versus control (P<0.05 both). DHA did not change in any group and SDA raised RBC EPA with roughly 17% of the efficiency of EPA. No other clinical endpoints were affected.
Conclusions
SDA-enriched oil meaningfully raises the omega-3 index but is a weak substitute for preformed EPA and does not raise DHA.
Limitations
Small per-protocol sample (11 per group); industry-sponsored; surrogate endpoints; SDA soybean oil rather than Ahiflower oil.
Supplements Studied
Compared to baseline, average omega-3 index levels increased 19.5% in the SDA group and 25.4% in the EPA group (p<0.05 for both, vs. control). DHA did not change in any group.
Outcomes Measured
No other clinical endpoints were affected by SDA or EPA treatment (vs. control).
