    Randomized Controlled Trial of Dietary Creatine as an Adjunct Therapy to Physical Training in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    Methodology

    Adequately powered randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of creatine loading and maintenance alongside supervised pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD patients, with exercise capacity, strength, body composition and quality of life endpoints.

    Key Findings

    Creatine supplementation added to a 7-week multidisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation programme produced no additional gains in exercise capacity, peripheral muscle strength, fat-free mass or health status over placebo in COPD.

    Conclusions

    This adequately powered, randomized, placebo-controlled trial shows that creatine supplementation does not augment the substantial training effect of multidisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with COPD.

    Limitations

    Single rehabilitation programme, moderate sample (n=100), possible ceiling effect from the strong training response, and no assessment of longer maintenance dosing.
