Published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

    Abstract

Meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials of oat beta-glucan and blood lipids.

    Key Findings

At least 3 g/day of oat beta-glucan lowered LDL cholesterol by about 0.25 mmol/L and total cholesterol by about 0.30 mmol/L compared with control.

    Conclusions

Oat beta-glucan produces a clinically meaningful reduction in LDL cholesterol.

    Limitations

Heterogeneity in food matrices and background diets; mostly short trials.

    Supplements Studied

At least 3 g/day of oat beta-glucan lowered LDL cholesterol by about 0.25 mmol/L and total cholesterol by about 0.30 mmol/L compared with control.

    Outcomes Measured

At least 3 g/day of oat beta-glucan lowered LDL cholesterol by about 0.25 mmol/L and total cholesterol by about 0.30 mmol/L compared with control.
