    Curcumin: A Review of Its' Effects on Human Health

    Abstract

    Comprehensive review of curcumin clinical applications across inflammation, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and exercise recovery. Highlights bioavailability challenges and importance of formulations with piperine or lipid complexation for therapeutic effects.

    Methodology

    Narrative review of human studies of curcumin across inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety and exercise-induced muscle soreness, with discussion of bioavailability enhancement strategies.

    Key Findings

    Curcumin reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative stress across several small trials, with the most consistent clinical signal in osteoarthritis symptom relief and exercise recovery. Native curcumin is poorly absorbed and rapidly metabolised, so most positive trials used piperine-combined, phospholipid or nanoparticle formulations.

    Conclusions

    Curcumin is generally safe and shows modest benefit for inflammatory and joint symptoms when a bioavailability-enhanced formulation is used; plain turmeric powder is unlikely to reproduce trial results.

    Limitations

    Narrative review without systematic search, pooled analysis or risk-of-bias assessment; underlying trials are small, short, heterogeneous in formulation and frequently manufacturer-funded.
