Abstract
Updated Cochrane systematic review evaluating colchicine for treatment of acute gout flares, which commonly affect the first metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.
Methodology
Comprehensive search for RCTs comparing colchicine to placebo or other active treatments for acute gout; GRADE approach used.
Key Findings
Low-dose colchicine probably reduces pain in acute gout compared to placebo and has fewer GI adverse events than high-dose colchicine.
Conclusions
Colchicine, particularly at low doses, is an effective treatment option for acute gout flares including those affecting the foot.
Limitations
Limited number of high-quality trials; small sample sizes in some included studies; variation in dosing regimens; low-to-moderate certainty of evidence.
