Published in Translational Psychiatry
Methodology
Meta-analysis of 26 randomized placebo-controlled trials of omega-3 PUFA supplementation in participants with depressive symptoms or major depressive disorder
Key Findings
Omega-3 PUFAs showed a significant overall antidepressant effect (SMD -0.28, 95% CI -0.47 to -0.09); benefit was confined to formulations with EPA >=60% at doses <=1 g/day of EPA.
Conclusions
Omega-3 preparations with a high EPA fraction have a modest antidepressant effect; DHA-predominant formulas do not.
Limitations
High heterogeneity across trials, small individual samples, and possible publication bias.
Supplements Studied
Our meta-analysis provides evidence that omega-3 PUFAs might be efficacious in improving depressive symptoms, with formulations containing EPA >= 60% showing benefit.
Outcomes Measured
Omega-3 PUFAs might be efficacious in improving depressive symptoms, with EPA-predominant formulations showing benefit.
