Magnesium for acute traumatic brain injury

    Arango MF

Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

    Methodology

Cochrane systematic review of randomized controlled trials of magnesium salts versus placebo or control in patients with acute traumatic brain injury, with mortality and disability as primary outcomes.

    Key Findings

Only two small randomized trials met inclusion criteria and neither showed benefit of magnesium salts on mortality or neurological outcome after acute traumatic brain injury; one suggested a possible trend towards harm.

    Conclusions

No evidence supports the use of magnesium salts in acute traumatic brain injury.

    Limitations

Very few eligible trials with small combined sample size, heterogeneous dosing regimens, and insufficient power to detect moderate treatment effects.
