    Consumption of Buglossoides arvensis seed oil is safe and increases tissue long-chain n-3 fatty acid content more than flax seed oil: results of a phase I randomised clinical trial

    Methodology

    Phase I randomized clinical trial comparing Buglossoides arvensis (Ahiflower) seed oil with flaxseed oil and a corn oil control over 28 days, measuring blood and tissue fatty acid composition and safety markers.

    Key Findings

    Ahiflower oil raised eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and total long-chain n-3 content in blood and cells significantly more than flaxseed oil, consistent with stearidonic acid bypassing the rate-limiting delta-6-desaturase step. No adverse effects on safety biomarkers were seen. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) did not increase.

    Conclusions

    Ahiflower oil is a safe plant-based route to raising EPA status more efficiently than flaxseed oil, but it does not raise DHA.

    Limitations

    Small phase I sample, 28-day duration, biomarker endpoints only with no clinical outcomes, and industry supply of the test oil.
