Abstract
Randomized crossover trial of Ahiflower oil and taurine on n-3 long-chain PUFA and oxylipin status.
Methodology
Monocentric randomized crossover study in 29 healthy male volunteers receiving Ahiflower oil 9 g/d, taurine 1.5 g/d, or both for 20 days each, complemented by HepG2 hepatocyte experiments
Key Findings
Ahiflower oil raised plasma EPA from 0.2% to 0.6% of total fatty acid methyl esters and increased EPA-derived oxylipins, while DHA levels were unaffected. Taurine changed nothing in plasma or cells; in hepatocytes SDA raised EPA 65% more than ALA.
Conclusions
Ahiflower oil consumption improves circulating EPA and EPA-derived oxylipins in humans, but does not raise DHA.
Limitations
Small, healthy young male-only sample; 20-day interventions; biomarker endpoints with no clinical outcomes.
