    Systematic review and meta-analysis of 46 randomised trials (over 4000 participants) of berberine, alone or with hypoglycaemic drugs, in type 2 diabetes.

    Key Findings

    Berberine significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, postprandial glucose, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides versus control, with mainly mild gastrointestinal side effects.

    Conclusions

    Berberine improves glycaemic and lipid profiles in type 2 diabetes, supporting the rationale for better-absorbed forms such as dihydroberberine.

    Limitations

    Most trials conducted in China with modest methodological quality; heterogeneity high; evidence is for berberine, not dihydroberberine specifically.
