    Abstract

    This meta-analysis of individual participant data examined whether subclinical hypo- or hyperthyroidism is associated with increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

    Methodology

    Pooled individual participant data from multiple international prospective cohorts with baseline thyroid function tests.

    Key Findings

    Subclinical thyroid dysfunction was not significantly associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline or dementia.

    Conclusions

    Subclinical thyroid dysfunction does not appear to be a significant independent risk factor for cognitive decline in older populations.

    Limitations

    Variation in thyroid function assay methods and cognitive assessment tools; residual confounding possible; relatively short follow-up in some cohorts.
