    Can coenzyme Q10 improve clinical and molecular parameters in fibromyalgia?

    Methodology

    Double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of CoQ10 (300 mg/day) for 40 days in fibromyalgia patients, with clinical questionnaires and molecular assays of oxidative stress and mitochondrial biogenesis.

    Key Findings

    Coenzyme Q10 supplementation in fibromyalgia patients improved clinical symptom scores (pain, fatigue and tender points) alongside improvements in mitochondrial and oxidative-stress markers in blood mononuclear cells.

    Conclusions

    These results lead to the hypothesis that CoQ10 have a potential therapeutic effect in FM, and indicate new potential molecular targets for the therapy of this disease.

    Limitations

    Very small sample (n=20), short duration and single-centre design; molecular endpoints are surrogates of uncertain clinical meaning.
