Salt supplementation in the management of orthostatic intolerance: Vasovagal syncope and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome
Williams EL, et al
Published in Autonomic Neuroscience
Methodology
Systematic review of trials and observational studies of oral salt supplementation in vasovagal syncope and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, examining tilt-table tolerance, symptom burden and blood pressure.
Key Findings
Across included studies, increased salt intake over roughly three months reduced susceptibility to vasovagal syncope and lessened orthostatic symptoms, with plasma volume expansion the likely mechanism and minimal change in supine blood pressure.
Conclusions
Short-term (~3 months) salt supplementation improves susceptibility to VVS and associated symptoms, with little effect on supine blood pressure.
Limitations
Few randomized trials, heterogeneous salt doses and outcome measures, short follow-up and unknown long-term cardiovascular safety.
