Cardiovascular
    Moderate Evidence

    Heart Rate Variability

Enhanced cardiac adaptability and autonomic balance.

    TL;DR

HRV reflects autonomic balance and is best improved by sleep, aerobic base training, alcohol reduction and slow breathing. Omega-3 and magnesium show modest effects; the lifestyle levers are far larger.

    Why It Matters

Reduced HRV predicts cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality and tracks overtraining, illness onset, poor sleep and psychological stress. Absolute values vary hugely between people, so only personal trends are meaningful.

    How to Measure

    Biomarkers

    Morning RMSSD trend
    Resting heart rate
    Sleep duration and consistency
    Alcohol intake
    Training load

    Optimization Protocol

Prioritise consistent sleep timing and duration, keep alcohol low, build an aerobic base with mostly easy-intensity work, and practise slow paced breathing at around six breaths per minute for ten minutes daily. Measure at the same time each morning and judge seven-day rolling averages, not single readings.
