Mental Exhaustion
Cognitive tiredness, difficulty thinking clearly, mental fog after intellectual work
TL;DR
Mental fatigue is usually the output of chronic stress, poor sleep, or sustained overwork — not a supplement deficiency. Rhodiola has the best evidence of any adaptogen for fatigue symptoms, working within days to weeks, but it is a bridge, not a solution. Persistent exhaustion warrants checking iron, thyroid, B12, and screening for depression and sleep apnoea.
Overview
Mental fatigue — feeling cognitively drained, slow and unable to concentrate — is usually the sum of sleep debt, sustained stress, decision overload and too little recovery, rather than a supplement deficiency. It is worth ruling out common medical contributors: iron deficiency (with or without anaemia), underactive thyroid, low mood and poor sleep quality including apnoea. Caffeine masks fatigue short-term but fragments sleep when taken after mid-afternoon. Rhodiola rosea (200-400 mg of standardised extract) has modest trial support for stress-related fatigue; the foundation remains sleep regularity, workload boundaries and genuine breaks.
Root Causes
Evidence synthesis: Rhodiola rosea has the strongest evidence base among adaptogens for fatigue, with several randomised trials showing reductions in mental fatigue and improvements in attention under stress, including in burnout populations — though many trials are small and some originate from research groups with commercial ties. Creatine has emerging evidence for reducing mental fatigue during cognitively demanding tasks and sleep deprivation. For the common causes themselves, the evidence is unambiguous: sleep restriction reliably impairs cognition, depression presents with fatigue in most cases, and iron deficiency without anaemia causes measurable fatigue that resolves with repletion. No supplement substitutes for reducing workload or restoring sleep.
How It's Diagnosed
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if mental fatigue persists for more than a few weeks despite adequate rest, or comes with low mood, loss of interest, physical exhaustion, breathlessness or heavy periods (suggesting iron deficiency). Blood tests for ferritin, thyroid function and B12 are a reasonable starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick Facts
- •Ferritin below 30 ng/mL can cause fatigue even when haemoglobin is normal
- •Caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours — a 3 pm coffee still affects 9 pm sleep pressure
- •Rhodiola rosea 200-400 mg daily showed modest benefits for stress fatigue in small trials
- •Decision fatigue is measurable: cognitive performance declines across the working day
- •Screens in the last hour before bed delay sleep onset and deepen next-day fatigue
