    Vitamin D receptors are present in brain regions involved in mood regulation, and levels track sunlight exposure. The seasonal decline is real; whether repleting it changes mood independent of light exposure is the unresolved question.

    What the studies say

    Vitamin D supplementation for seasonal affective symptoms has produced mixed trial results — some positive in deficient participants, several null overall. This contrasts with bright light therapy, which has consistent meta-analytic support for seasonal depression with antidepressant-comparable effect sizes. The pragmatic evidence-based position: test and correct deficiency (also relevant for winter infection risk per the respiratory-infection meta-analysis), while treating morning light as the primary intervention.
