Vitamin D levels genuinely fall through winter and deficiency is worth correcting — but trials for seasonal mood and fatigue are mixed, so think of it as sensible groundwork, not the fix. Light is the fix.

Evidence is mixed: vitamin D levels fall predictably in winter at higher latitudes, and trials in deficient people show improvements in fatigue scores after repletion, including a randomised trial in vitamin-D-deficient adults with fatigue. In people with normal levels, supplementation does not improve energy, and winter tiredness has other drivers - reduced light exposure, disrupted circadian timing, less activity and poorer sleep.

The lack of improvement in indices of mental well-being in the vitamin D group does not support the hypothesis that an annual high dose of vitamin D3 is a practical intervention to prevent depressive symptoms in older community-dwelling women.

Max 4,000 IU/day unsupervised. Correcting deficiency is sensible; expecting it to replace light exposure is not supported.
