    Spirulina for Allergic Rhinitis

    Spirulina at 2 g/day reduced nasal discharge, sneezing, congestion and itching versus placebo in a randomised double-blind trial of allergic rhinitis patients. The effect is attributed to phycocyanin-driven suppression of Th2 responses and mast-cell histamine release.

    Overview

    Spirulina is one of the few supplements for hay fever that has been compared head to head with a real antihistamine rather than only against placebo. In the linked trial it was tested against cetirizine, the active ingredient in most over-the-counter allergy tablets.
    The result was more interesting than most botanical allergy research: both arms improved nasal symptom scores, and spirulina held its own on several symptom domains. The trial was small and short, which is the limit on how much weight that comparison can carry.

    How It Works

    Spirulina's proposed mechanism is immunomodulatory rather than antihistaminic. Phycocyanin, its blue pigment, inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 and reduces production of the inflammatory cytokines that drive the allergic response, and animal work shows reduced histamine release from mast cells.
    Human studies have reported reduced interleukin-4, a cytokine central to IgE class switching in allergy. This is a plausible upstream route to fewer symptoms rather than a receptor block, which is also why any effect is expected to build over weeks rather than within an hour of a dose.
