    How It Works

MSM donates sulfur for disulfide bonds in collagen and keratin and has mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in connective tissue.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    2–3 g/day; allow 2–4 weeks for effects.
    Expected timeframe
    8-12 weeks

    Protocol

    form
    MSM powder or capsules
    duration
    12 weeks
    co factor
Take with food in divided doses. Evidence is mixed and indirect for ligaments specifically. MSM supplies bioavailable sulfur, and sulfur is incorporated into the sulfated glycosaminoglycans of connective tissue matrix, which is a genuine structural role. Trials in knee osteoarthritis at 3-6 g/day show modest improvements in pain and function, and small studies in exercising adults report reduced post-exercise joint and muscle discomfort. But no trial has measured ligament healing, tensile strength, laxity or injury recurrence with MSM, and ligaments have notoriously poor blood supply, which is the principal reason they heal slowly - a supplement does not change that. For tendon and ligament loading tolerance, the evidence favours progressive mechanical loading, with some support for collagen or gelatin taken with vitamin C before loading.
    titration
Up to 3-6 g/day in divided doses over 1-2 weeks
    starting dose
    1.5 g/day with food

    Evidence

    What the studies say

RCTs show reduced post-exercise muscle soreness and joint discomfort at 2–3 g/day; direct ligament-specific trials are lacking. Often combined with glucosamine in OA studies with additive benefit.

No studies are yet linked to both MSM and Ligament Health.

    Safety

    Caveats

Very safe; mild GI upset initially. Not a substitute for progressive loading rehab.

    Less likely to help if

Ligament injuries requiring structural repair rather than support.
