    Overview

    Ordinary citrus pectin is a large indigestible fibre that passes through the gut unabsorbed. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is depolymerised with pH and temperature treatment into short, low-esterified fragments small enough to be partly absorbed, which is what allows it to act systemically rather than only in the intestine. Its two claimed actions follow from that. First, MCP's galactose-rich fragments bind galectin-3, a lectin implicated in fibrosis, inflammation and tumour cell adhesion — a target of genuine mainstream research interest, though inhibiting it with a dietary polysaccharide is an unproven leap. Second, MCP chelates divalent cations, and several small studies, including work in lead-exposed children and adults, reported substantial increases in urinary lead and other heavy metals without depleting essential minerals in the short term. The oncology literature is far weaker than the marketing: a small uncontrolled study reported lengthened PSA doubling time in prostate cancer, and one trial in biochemically relapsed disease reported stabilisation, but neither used a control group. No randomized controlled trial has shown MCP affects cancer outcomes. Reasonable framing: a well-tolerated fibre derivative with some heavy-metal excretion data and a plausible galectin-3 story that remains scientifically unfinished.
