Commercial MCT oil is fractionated from coconut or palm kernel oil and typically contains caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10); C8 raises ketones more efficiently. Evidence supports acute ketone elevation and small effects on satiety and energy expenditure (roughly 50-100 kcal/day in metabolic studies). Trials in mild cognitive impairment show ketone uptake in the brain improves cognition modestly in APOE4-negative subjects. Weight-loss meta-analyses show only modest effects (~0.5 kg over placebo). Claims of dramatic fat loss or athletic performance enhancement are not supported; endurance evidence is weak and large doses impair performance via GI symptoms.
