    What the studies say

    A handful of small RCTs of lutein/zeaxanthin in screen workers report improved contrast sensitivity, reduced glare discomfort, and lower visual fatigue scores, but samples are small and several are industry-funded. Lutein's strong evidence lies elsewhere — in age-related macular degeneration progression (AREDS2). For eye strain itself: break every 20 minutes, check for uncorrected refractive error, manage dry eye, and fix screen ergonomics.

    Caveats

    Persistent eye strain warrants a refraction check and dry-eye assessment. High-dose beta-carotene (not lutein) raises lung-cancer risk in smokers - check combination formulas. Skin yellowing at high intakes.

    Anyone with uncorrected refractive error, dry eye or convergence insufficiency.
