    D-Chiro-Inositol for Ovulation Support

DCI can restore ovulation in insulin-resistant PCOS, though high doses may reduce oocyte quality.

    Overview

    How It Works

Restoring insulin sensitivity reduces hyperandrogenism and permits normal follicular maturation and LH surge.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
2 g myo-inositol plus 50 mg D-chiro-inositol twice daily (40:1). Keep D-chiro-inositol low — do not use high-dose DCI alone when trying to conceive.
    Expected timeframe
3 months to restored ovulation in responders; 6 months for full effect

    Protocol

    dose
    2 g myo-inositol + 50 mg D-chiro-inositol twice daily
    form
    Powder or capsules
    steps
Use the 40:1 combination, not high-dose D-chiro-inositol — DCI above roughly 1200 mg/day reduces aromatase activity and has been linked to poorer egg quality,Add 400-800 mcg folate daily if conception is the goal,Confirm ovulation objectively with LH tests or a mid-luteal progesterone blood test rather than assuming,Allow 3 months minimum; egg development cycles take about 90 days,See a fertility specialist if you are under 35 and have tried for 12 months, or over 35 and tried for 6
    timing
Twice daily with or before meals
    duration
    3-6 months

    What the studies say

Early trials reported markedly increased ovulation rates versus placebo. Subsequent IVF work found dose-dependent declines in oocyte and blastocyst quality with high DCI, tempering enthusiasm.

Nineteen of 22 women receiving D-chiro-inositol ovulated, as compared with 6 of 22 in the placebo group.

    Safety

    Caveats

Mixed evidence. The DCI paradox is the key safety ceiling: high-dose D-chiro-inositol alone can impair oocyte quality — keep it low and pair with myo-inositol. Restoring ovulation restores pregnancy risk. Use during pregnancy only under medical supervision. Discuss with your clinician if on metformin, letrozole or clomiphene.

    Less likely to help if

Anovulation from hypothalamic causes, premature ovarian insufficiency, tubal factor or male-factor infertility.
