    What the studies say

    Human research on burdock is dominated by small knee osteoarthritis trials, where burdock root tea lowered inflammatory markers. For digestion, the evidence is indirect on two fronts. First, bitter-tasting plants reliably trigger gastric secretion and gallbladder activity in physiological studies, and burdock is used this way across herbal traditions - but no randomised trial has measured dyspepsia or bloating with burdock specifically. Second, burdock root is up to 45% inulin by dry weight, and inulin is a well-studied prebiotic; however, the same fermentable fibre that feeds Bifidobacteria causes gas and bloating in people with IBS or FODMAP sensitivity, so the fibre content can worsen symptoms rather than help them.

    Caveats

    The inulin content makes burdock a high-FODMAP food. People with IBS may get more bloating, not less. Encapsulated burdock bypasses the bitter receptors and loses the digestive rationale entirely.
