Methodology
Double-blind multicentre randomized non-inferiority trial in 207 young children: fluoride-free microcrystalline hydroxyapatite toothpaste versus fluoride toothpaste, used three times daily for 336 days; caries on the primary teeth scored with ICDAS code 1 or above.
Key Findings
Caries increase was seen in 72.7% of the hydroxyapatite group and 74.2% of the fluoride group. The upper 95% limit of the difference (9.8%) was below the 20% non-inferiority margin.
Conclusions
Daily use of microcrystalline hydroxyapatite toothpaste was not inferior to fluoride toothpaste for enamel caries progression in children's primary teeth.
Limitations
One year; the 20% non-inferiority margin is wide; 177 of 207 finished; most children developed new early lesions in both groups.
