Published in Eur J Clin Nutr, Vol. 63 (7), pp. 821-7
Methodology
Meta-analysis of 21 randomized placebo-controlled trials (double-blind or open label) of psyllium in mild-to-moderate hypercholesterolemia, doses 3.0-20.4 g a day.
Key Findings
Psyllium lowered total cholesterol by 0.375 mmol/L and LDL cholesterol by 0.278 mmol/L versus placebo, with a significant dose-response relationship; total cholesterol fell faster than LDL cholesterol over time.
Conclusions
Psyllium produced dose- and time-dependent cholesterol lowering and would be useful as an adjunct to dietary therapy.
Limitations
Includes open-label trials; older trials in mild-to-moderate hypercholesterolemia only.
