Published in Eur J Clin Nutr
Methodology
Open-label randomised trial in 132 Indian children aged 6 months to 5 years with nutritional rickets, given 2,000, 3,000 or 4,000 IU of oral vitamin D3 daily for 12 weeks (44 per group).
Key Findings
The radiological severity score improved in all groups with no significant difference between doses (P = 0.280). Three children had hypercalciuria and six had 25-hydroxyvitamin D above 100 ng/mL, all in the 3,000 and 4,000 IU groups. Dietary calcium intake was related to the final score whichever dose was given (P = 0.008).
Conclusions
Daily oral vitamin D3 doses of 2000, 3000 and 4000 IU were comparable in efficacy in the treatment of nutritional rickets.
Limitations
Open-label; 12 weeks; no placebo; one country. Published in 2026 and not yet assigned to an issue.
Supplements Studied
