    Methodology

Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of at least 3 weeks assessing barley beta-glucan-enriched diets against control diets.

    Key Findings

    14 trials (n=615). A median 6.5 g/day of barley beta-glucan over a median 4 weeks lowered LDL cholesterol by 0.25 mmol/L (95% CI 0.20 to 0.30) and non-HDL cholesterol by 0.31 mmol/L; apoB did not change significantly.

    Conclusions

Barley beta-glucan lowers LDL and non-HDL cholesterol; barley foods may help with cardiovascular risk targets.

    Limitations

Short trials (median 4 weeks), higher doses than the 3 g/day usually advised, considerable heterogeneity for non-HDL cholesterol (I2=98%).
