Published in BJU Int, Vol. 85 (7), pp. 836-41
Methodology
Systematic review of randomised or controlled trials of rye grass pollen extract in men with symptomatic BPH lasting at least 30 days, with placebo or drug comparators.
Key Findings
Four trials, 444 men, 12-24 weeks. Versus placebo, more men reported improved urinary symptoms (RR 2.40, 1.21-4.75) and nocturia (RR 2.05, 1.41-3.00). No improvement in urine flow, residual volume or prostate size. Withdrawals 4.8% vs 2.7% on placebo.
Conclusions
The extract is well tolerated and modestly improves overall urological symptoms, including nocturia.
Limitations
Short, small trials with unclear allocation concealment, missing outcomes and unknown product quality.
