Published in Adv Nutr, Vol. 14 (3), pp. 465-474
Methodology
Systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of 181 RCTs (220 arms, 14,505 adults) of soluble fiber supplements and blood lipids, graded with GRADE.
Key Findings
Soluble fiber lowered LDL cholesterol by 8.28 mg/dL, total cholesterol by 10.82 mg/dL, triglycerides by 5.55 mg/dL and apolipoprotein B. Each extra 5 g/day lowered LDL by 5.57 mg/dL.
Conclusions
Soluble fiber supplements could contribute to managing dyslipidemia and lowering cardiovascular risk.
Limitations
Wide range of fiber types, doses and populations pooled; lipid change is a surrogate outcome.
Supplements Studied
soluble fiber supplementation could contribute to the management of dyslipidemia
Outcomes Measured
Each 5 g/d increase in soluble fiber supplementation had a significant reduction in TC
