Methodology
Three-arm, partially blinded, placebo-controlled RCT in Finland in adults aged 50-85 with at least 2 leg cramps a week: knee-high compression stockings, magnesium hydrochloride or placebo pills daily for 4 weeks.
Key Findings
At week 8, magnesium did not differ from placebo (adjusted mean difference -0.20 cramps a week, 95% CI -1.49 to 1.09). Compression stockings reduced cramps versus placebo (-1.43 a week, 95% CI -2.36 to -0.50; P = .001).
Conclusions
Compression stockings reduced leg cramp frequency, pain and nocturnal awakenings in older adults; magnesium did not.
Limitations
Stockings arm could not be blinded; the abstract does not state the magnesium dose; 4 weeks of treatment.
Supplements Studied
No significant difference was observed between the magnesium and placebo groups
