    Savaş-Erdeve S, Gökay S, Dallar Y

Published in Turk J Pediatr, Vol. 51 (3), pp. 220-4

    Methodology

Randomised prospective trial in 85 children with amoebiasis-associated acute diarrhoea: metronidazole alone for 10 days (n=45) or metronidazole plus S. boulardii (n=40). Outcomes were duration of acute and bloody diarrhoea, stool frequency and consistency, symptom resolution and tolerability.

    Key Findings

Median duration of acute diarrhoea was 5 days without and 4.5 days with S. boulardii (p=0.965). Stool numbers and the duration of bloody diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain and vomiting were similar. No side effects were recorded with the yeast.

    Conclusions

Adding S. boulardii to metronidazole did not appear more effective than metronidazole alone; it was well tolerated.

    Limitations

The abstract does not give the yeast dose, the blinding method or cyst clearance; small sample.
