Methodology
Randomised trial in 110 children aged 6 months to 5 years with nutritional rickets, given a single oral dose of 90,000 IU or 300,000 IU of vitamin D3 and followed for 12 weeks.
Key Findings
The radiographic score fell from 6.90 to 0.16 (90,000 IU) and from 6.93 to 0.23 (300,000 IU). Hypercalciuria, hypercalcaemia and hypervitaminosis D were seen more often in the 300,000 IU group; there were no clinical adverse events.
Conclusions
A single oral dose of 90,000 IU vitamin D3 is safe and effective in achieving healing of rickets.
Limitations
86 of 110 children completed; single centre; no daily-dose or placebo group.
