Published in J Am Dent Assoc, Vol. 144 (1), pp. 21-30

    Methodology

Three-site, placebo-controlled randomised trial in caries-active adults aged 21-80 given five 1.0 g xylitol or placebo lozenges daily for 33 months.

    Key Findings

Xylitol lozenges reduced the caries increment by 10 percent, less than one-third of a surface per year, which was not statistically significant. There was no dose-response effect.

    Conclusions

Daily xylitol lozenges did not significantly reduce 33-month caries increment in adults at elevated risk.

    Limitations

Adults only, lozenge form only, and a 5 g daily dose; results do not apply to gum or to children.
