Refractory potassium repletion. A consequence of magnesium deficiency
Whang R, Whang DD, Ryan MP
Published in Arch Intern Med, Vol. 152 (1), pp. 40-5
Methodology
Review of clinical and experimental observations linking magnesium deficiency to refractory potassium repletion.
Key Findings
Concomitant magnesium deficiency in potassium-depleted patients ranges from 38% to 42%. It may operate in heart failure, digitalis toxicity, cisplatin therapy and potent loop diuretic use.
Conclusions
Serum magnesium should be assessed routinely, and hypokalemic patients considered for magnesium as well as potassium.
Limitations
Older narrative review.
