Abstract
Study demonstrating PQQ stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis through CREB phosphorylation and PGC-1α activation, providing mechanism for enhanced cellular energy production and potential anti-aging effects.
Methodology
Laboratory study in mouse hepatocytes and cell culture examining pyrroloquinoline quinone effects on CREB phosphorylation, PGC-1alpha expression, mitochondrial DNA content and respiratory capacity.
Key Findings
PQQ exposure increased CREB phosphorylation and PGC-1alpha expression, with corresponding increases in mitochondrial DNA content and cellular respiration, indicating stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis.
Conclusions
PQQ can trigger mitochondrial biogenesis signalling in cells, providing a mechanistic rationale for further study; it does not by itself demonstrate any clinical benefit in humans.
Limitations
Cell and rodent work only, with supraphysiological exposures and no human outcomes; mechanistic findings frequently fail to translate into clinical effect.
Outcomes Measured
PQQ stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis through CREB phosphorylation and PGC-1α activation, providing mechanism for enhanced cellular energy production.
