Methodology
Double-blind placebo-controlled trial: 49 adults with type 2 diabetes on antidiabetic drugs took 5.1 g of psyllium husk or placebo twice a day, before breakfast and dinner, for 8 weeks.
Key Findings
Psyllium lowered fasting glucose and HbA1c (both P < 0.05) and raised HDL cholesterol. Both products were well tolerated and better gastric tolerance to metformin was recorded with psyllium.
Conclusions
5.1 g twice a day of psyllium is safe, well tolerated and improves glycemic control as an add-on.
Limitations
Small trial with only 8 weeks of treatment; the abstract gives P values rather than effect sizes.
Supplements Studied
5.1g b.i.d. of psyllium for persons with type II diabetes is safe, well tolerated
