Post-epidemic eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome associated with L-tryptophan
Allen JA, Peterson A, Sufit R
Published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, Vol. 63 (11), pp. 3633-9
Key Findings
Reports a new case of L-tryptophan-associated eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, after no new cases had been described since the US FDA lifted its ban on L-tryptophan in 2005, with evidence of activated TGF-beta and interleukin-4 signalling in the affected skin.
Conclusions
Product-quality safety risk persists.
Limitations
Single case report, so it cannot establish how often this happens or prove that the supplement caused it.
Supplements Studied
L-Tryptophan
Amino Acid
Cases of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome continued to be reported in patients taking L-tryptophan after the 1989 epidemic.
