Methodology
Multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial; 139 men with inflammatory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (NIH IIIA) took two capsules of the rye grass pollen extract every 8 hours (n=70) or placebo (n=69) for 12 weeks. Primary endpoint: the pain domain of the NIH-CPSI.
Key Findings
At 12 weeks pain (p=0.0086), quality of life (p=0.0250) and total NIH-CPSI score (p=0.0126) improved significantly more than on placebo. Response (total NIH-CPSI down at least 25% or 6 points) was 70.6% vs 50.0% (p=0.0141). Adverse events were minor.
Conclusions
The pollen extract improved total symptoms, pain and quality of life in inflammatory CP/CPPS without severe side effects.
Limitations
12 weeks only; restricted to the inflammatory subtype (IIIA); capsule strength not given in the abstract.
Supplements Studied
the pollen extract significantly improved total symptoms, pain, and QoL
