Published in Exp Ther Med, Vol. 8 (4), pp. 1032-1038

    Methodology

Randomised controlled phase III trial at one urology centre; 87 men (mean age 33.6) with CP/CPPS took pollen extract with vitamins, two capsules every 24 hours, or ibuprofen 600 mg three times daily for 4 weeks.

    Key Findings

At 1 month, 75.6% (31/41) on the pollen product vs 41.3% (19/46) on ibuprofen had a 25% or greater fall in NIH-CPSI total score (P=0.002); NIH-CPSI pain-domain difference -2.14 (P<0.001). Adverse events were less frequent on the pollen product.

    Conclusions

The pollen extract and vitamin product improved symptoms, pain and quality of life more than ibuprofen.

    Limitations

Combination product, so the extract's own effect can't be isolated; active comparator, no placebo; single centre; 4 weeks; blinding not described in the abstract.
