Published in Appl Physiol Nutr Metab, Vol. 35 (6), pp. 755-62
Methodology
Double-blind pilot trial in 20 elite athletes randomised to 100 mg pleuran (n=9) or placebo (n=11) daily for 2 months, tested before and after a 20-minute intensive exercise bout.
Key Findings
Natural killer cell activity fell 28% below baseline during recovery in the placebo group (P<0.01) but not in the pleuran group. Immune cell counts did not differ between groups.
Conclusions
The authors suggested pleuran may modulate exercise-induced changes in natural killer cell activity.
Limitations
Very small pilot; immune markers only, with no infection outcomes.
Supplements Studied
no significant reduction in NKCA was found in the β-glucan group
Outcomes Measured
no significant reduction in NKCA was found in the β-glucan group
may play a role in modulating exercise-induced changes in NKCA
