Methodology
Single-centre, prospective, open-label pilot in 49 children aged 6-11 with recurrent respiratory infections, allergy or asthma, taking 1-2 chewable pleuran, vitamin D and zinc tablets daily. Salivary secretory IgA was measured at baseline, after 4-6 days and after 8-10 days.
Key Findings
Salivary secretory IgA rose significantly after 8-10 days (P=0.045). No adverse events were observed.
Conclusions
The authors concluded that short-term use of the chewable pleuran supplement improved a marker of mucosal immunity.
Limitations
No control group; very short; laboratory marker only; combined product, so pleuran's own effect cannot be separated.
