Published in J Drugs Dermatol, Vol. 10 (10), pp. 1168-72
Methodology
Investigator-initiated randomised, double-blind trial in 40 patients after surgical skin excision: 3% oregano extract ointment versus petrolatum on the wound. Cultures on day 12; scars assessed on days 12, 45 and 90.
Key Findings
19% of cultures in the oregano group grew Staphylococcus aureus versus 41% with petrolatum; one cellulitis versus three. Scar colour, pigmentation and pliability were better with oregano; overall scar appearance was equivalent.
Conclusions
Topical oregano extract ointment reduced bacterial contamination of post-surgical wounds.
Limitations
Topical use only, so it says nothing about oral oregano oil; small; infection counts too few for firm conclusions.
Supplements Studied
